So my last post about How I Healed My Leaky Gut generated the most overwhelming (and much welcomed) response from you all.

I received several comments on the blog,Facebook, Instagram, e-mails and even text and phone calls from friends who have reached out to me about experiencing similar GI distress.

As much as I wouldn't wish what I've dealt with on anyone, I found a lot of comfort to hear from you and to know that I wasn't crazy, that it wasn't all in my head and that, most importantly, I wasn't alone. So thank you for that...

Magic Liver Pills

There's been a lot of interest lately on Instagram over what I refer to as my "Magic Liver Pills".

So what are they?

Why am I eating them?
How do I make them?

Yes, I know what you're thinking. Organ meat? Really?!

Yes. Really. I am proud to say that I now eat organ meat (aka offal)-- note that is singular since I haven't explored anything beyond liver. While I was hesitant at first, I can honestly say that the process is actually very painless and I should have picked up the habit long ago.

How I Healed My Leaky Gut

As long as I can remember I always had some sort of ailment of gas, constipation or pain, and it occurred for so long that I accepted it as normal. While switching to a real food based diet nearly eliminated these issues, I wasn’t completely free of something that I began to refer to as “flare ups”. It’s simply a term I made up to describe what would happen to my gut when I ate something that my body didn't agree with. My mid-section would swell, I experienced some water retention, and a feeling of discomfort that usually went away by the next morning. At this point, the reactions were tolerable, extremely mild, and intermittent compared to what I was about to experience.

Ketosis: Friend or Foe?

Ketogenic diets are getting a lot of attention these days and along with that attention comes a great amount of debate as to whether or not this metabolic state is ideal for individuals to purposely put themselves in. The information available is constantly growing and can be extremely confusing to a newcomer.
The good thing about disagreement is that it is one of the best ways to fuel growth and progress. While there are some remarkable things people are doing to improve their health through ketogenic diets, there is still a lot we have to learn about it and the common misunderstanding of this metabolic state is what I intend to address in this post.

Why Do I Instagram?

So there have been quite a few memes and videos being shared on social media sites lately, making fun of pre meal photog sessions, hashtags and status updates. I have to admit, they're hilarious! But there's a  reason why I post what I do on my Instagram account and why I absolutely love this particular social media platform.

While this is mostly directed towards friends and family who constantly ask, (insert nasally voice here)  "why do you only post food pictures on your instagram???", I'm sure plenty of my readers can also relate.

Five Health Benefits of Eating Fat

8/12/2014

Once upon a time, I feared fat so much that I intentionally consumed food-like products because I believed they were actually healthier for me. Margarine, "butter" spray, soy based salad dressings, fat free fill-in-the-blank all because I was worried about the fat content.

Now, it kind of turns my stomach just thinking about it... and if you know about all the health benefits that real fat offers, it might do the same to you. But in case you haven't heard, the "low fat" trend is so out and foods like butter is back! Yep, good ole' fashioned natural butter is surpassing sales of margarine for the first time in over 40 years! People are starting to realize that synthetic, factory made, versions of real food will not translate to better health. Who'dathunkit?

There's this topic that has been on my mind lately and up until this morning I hadn't yet figured out how to translate it into a blog post. So what does this quote, "Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist" have to do with a Paleo lifestyle?

A lot, actually.

Know Your Fats

Saturated. Unsaturated. Mono and Poly-unsaturated. Omega 3's, Omega 6's and maybe you've even heard of Omega 7's and 9's....
It really is enough to make anybody's head spin, even a dietary fat guru such as myself.

Being a highly visual learner, I need color, drawings and charts to help organize and retain information. I literally got through Paramedic school drawing components of the heart and making charts of the nervous system so I could understand how different medications worked when administered.

That being said, it was time for me to create a (legible) graph to share with others that would help explain the different categories of dietary fat.

My Big Fat Heated Experiment

Lately, I've been seeing more and more conflicting reports on what kind of fats are stable enough to be heated, such as olive oil vs coconut oil.

Conduct a quick search of this subject on your own and you may be left with less clarity than you started out with.

Being that I don't cook with either (I'm partial to ghee and lard), I was still curious to see for myself how each of these fats would hold up under a little heated experiment.

    :::Author:::

I'm Alexandra; blogger, paramedic, and eater of fat.
I eat bacon daily, take my coffee with heavy cream, eat the yolks and consume coconut oil by the spoonful. Because of this, I have never been healthier or happier in my life. Welcome to my blog, where I intend to abolish the fat phobia that plagues us and give dietary fat the healthy reputation it deserves.
