Since then it has gained some search engine traction, however there is still a lot more movement I would like to see happen.
Perhaps it's a topic that will make its way to Paleo F(x) this year?
I can only hope....
If you're still not entirely sure what colostrum is, start here to read the blog post Colostrum 101.
If you'd like to hear about my testimony, head over here to read about How I Healed My Leaky Gut.
Here is the brand I still continue to use,Surthrival, found here.

Before I started taking colostrum I was experiencing terrible indigestion after every single meal. It didn’t matter what I ate, even light meals like salad or soup left me bloated with a stomach ache. And not just a little bloated either—we’re talking 4-months-pregnant bloated. I had been following the autoimmune paleo diet for 9 months and not seeing any improvement when I found Alex’s blog posts about colostrum. Her IBD symptoms matched mine and after reading about her healing testimony I ordered some Surthrival colostrum to give it a shot. I started with a small dosage of 1 tsp twice a day. Even though I have a dairy sensitivity I didn’t experience any bad reactions. I worked my way up to a dosage of 2 TBSP twice a day over a period of three weeks. I plan on staying at that max dosage for 8-12 weeks per Alex’s recommendation, to heal my gut. As of today I have been taking colostrum for 7 weeks! It has significantly improved my bloating after meals, indigestion symptoms, and helped calm my overall gut inflammation enough to help me identify which certain foods within the AIP diet were causing me discomfort (before colostrum everything made me bloat so it was hard to figure out the source). I started noticing healing after I reached the 1 TBSP twice a day dosage. My back-to-back leaky gut flares subsided to about once a week and continued to decrease in frequency as I identified and removed food sensitivities. I love all the other benefits that come from taking colostrum besides just a healed gut. I feel like my immune system is stronger and more prepared to take on this year’s cold and flu season, my hair and nails have been growing like never before, and my workouts have improved. I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis so I deal with fatigue and slow metabolism (weight loss resistance and weight gain), amongst other symptoms. Colostrum has been a major building block in my healing journey. It is one of those supplements with very few negative side effects (only if you have a major dairy allergy) and countless benefits! It is great for those of us with autoimmune diseases especially, because it helps balance the immune system. I am so thankful Alex is spreading the word on this tried-and-true supplement and I think everyone can benefit from taking colostrum!
Hi Alex, just wanted to report back in since starting the colostrum. I was so skeptical of anything ever actually working for me to heal my gut. BUT, your colostrum enthusiasm encouraged me to start and the results have been phenomenal (to my surprise). I'm just getting to the full dosage of 2 tsp. per day as recommended on the package (I took 2 months to get there to avoid the die off I was having early on), and I'm already adding in foods with great success. I was basically unable to eat most vegetables before I started taking it. Mostly a meat diet (I think you can relate!). But now I've started to add FODMAPS back and I have a hard time believing my abdomen isn't bloated after eating them. I even ate about a dozen dried apricots last weekend (which would have made me look 8 months pregnant in the past!!) in one sitting and was fine. So shocked and surprised and grateful to say that. Seriously, I can FEEL my gut healing. For the first time in 4 years I'm actually adding foods to my diet rather than taking away. It's life changing progress after being so limited for so long, without answers to help me. So THANK YOU for your inspiration to try this. And by the way, I've been taking the Imu-tek brand recommended by Dr. David Getoff on his website, for anyone who wants to know. http://www.imutekcolostrum.com/colostrum-for-humans/human-colostrum/imutek-immuno-powder And for those lactose intolerant folks, I too am lactose intolerant (can tolerate butter but not any other dairy) and I've had no symptoms from taking this.
Fantastic love!!! I was introduced to Colostrum one night by my boyfriend feeding me a spoonful with honey on top, highly recommended!!;) after years of hpylori treatments, cleanses, candida cleanses, etc., one week of this and my inflammation is gone, I've lost weight, and I'm finally hungry, a lot. If I keep one thing in the cupboard it will be this..... and honey ;)
I had an interesting experience with bovine colostrum recently. We are regular travellers to Bali, but because I have (mild and mostly manageable) IBD I won't go without my Travelan, which a pharmacist put me onto about 4 years ago. This product is made from bovine colostrum, and the spiel says it increases resistance to e coli (the main cause of traveller's diarrhoea, or the dreaded "Bali belly"). Last year, my 4th trip to Bali, I unfortunately had the initial symptoms of a colitis flare a couple of weeks before. Hoping I wouldn't need medication, I was just very cautious with my diet in the days leading up to our trip, and of course took along my trusty Travelan.
I didn't get Bali belly (have never had it) and the huge bonus was that my colitis symptoms cleared up in no time. We had a great time, as usual. When I got home I Googled "Travelan and colitis" and found a few vague articles, but your references are brilliant. Thank you so much for your post.
PS. I think Travelan is an Australian product, but there is probably a similar product in other countries. http://www.travelan.com.au/index.php/how-does-travelan-work/
I enjoyed reading your story on using colostrum for leaky gut. Our company has been producing natural health products from whey/colostrum for over 50 years. We manufacture product from our dairy farm in NE Iowa that is marketed out of Arizona (aie10.com). It truly is a remarkable supplement. Three years ago our 6 yr old son, Gabriel, was diagnosed with an auto immune disorder known as FSGS (scarring of the kidneys). This was confirmed with a biopsy done at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. In April of this year at his annual checkup (we have since switched to the University of Iowa Children's Hospital), his doctor told us that he is "the only patient they have that is in complete remission without being on any anti-rejection meds." She also told us that these drugs are nothing but a bandaid, but "it's all we have." Plus,"He doesn't act like he ever had FSGS but we have the biopsy!" In spite of these incredible admissions, they absolutely do not want to know anything about the supplement Gabriel took to gain remission. It's so heartbreaking to see the suffering children at both of these facilities and then to be told that they're not interested in finding out anything more about why he is doing so good. FSGS can lead to dialysis, transplant and even death yet Gabriel couldn't be healthier. And we couldn't be happier! I have linked some reading material for you on this subject. It is fairly complex, but quite interesting to see the theory behind it all.The Dr. Peterson in these articles is the man my family worked with to establish our company. Keep up the good fight! http://www.littlesistersupplies.com/docs/FullJournal1.pdf http://www.littlesistersupplies.com/docs/FullJournal2.pdf http://www.littlesistersupplies.com/docs/FullJournal3.pdf
Within a week, I felt like a whole new person! So much so, that I didn’t actually believe it could be true. I kept doubting that it was working. But everyday, I kept getting better and better until I was feeling like my ‘pre-colitis’ self. Not only did my UC symptoms vanish, but ALL of my digestive issues were gone, my energy was through the roof all day, and I was just happy… because I finally felt free. Even though autoimmune diseases stick around for life, mine is no longer reminding me everyday.
After a few weeks, I began reintroducing foods I had given up months ago for AIP. First up were eggs. After my first breakfast with eggs, I wanted to get up and dance on the table. Not only did I not have the reaction I had in the past when trying to reintroduce, but I felt nourished and energized! I’ve kept the eggs and have also been able to add almond butter and coffee so far!
(in response to someone's comment on the blog)
Hey there! I can’t quite remember what I did to work my way up to the dose. I would imagine I took several weeks to get there. And yes, still doing well although I did have the realization that there was SO MUCH MORE to healing my gut than the colostrum. I do think it definitely was a piece of the puzzle, but there were a lot of other changes I made that had a significant effect on my gut health.
Sorry this is so late. But wanted to tell you my experience with colostrum. I found out I had celiacs disease late 2012 and started paleo early 2013 but still suffered from skin rashes on my chest, head and sometimes eyebrows, especially if accidentally exposed to gluten or anything containing corn (dextrose, xananth gum, and corn starch are in everything!) anyways, I tried colostrum after I read about it on your blog, and the rash on my chest and eyebrow cleared up, and my scalp was better than it had been in years. When I ran out, it came back. I tried one can of surthrival to start and then switched to colostrum ld from sovereign laboratories. I have the best success with the latter. I take a fairly large dose. Probably about 2 tablespoons first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This last month I've gone down to one tablespoon to try and make it last longer since it's crazy expensive and so far haven't noticed any negative effects like when I stop taking it. I can even have a bite of a corn tortilla chip of taco now with out having a terrible itchy rash! I'm hooked. Thanks for the tip!
My daughter Ania is 18 months old. About 8 months ago, she started developing rashes, she was constipated and had eczema and her attitude changed and she had horrible bags under her eyes. not knowing what was wrong, I thought it was candida issues or food allergies. After cutting out gluten and dairy some of her symptoms went away but to this day she continues to get rashes every single day - still leading me to think it was food allergies from fruits and vegetables or phenols and salicylates. I know the issue is in her gut we just don't know whats going on. After fighting with 3 different doctors we finally found a GI doctor who agrees something is wrong and ordered a whole bunch of tests. In the mean time i was left to my own hands to do my own research to help my daughter any way i could. I didn't know about colostrum until reading your post about it and i went out the next day and bought some. I was scared because it was from cows and i didn't want it to hurt her more because of dairy issues. But in the 3 weeks she's been taking it, she gets rashes significantly less, and even after we were told to reintroduce gluten for proper celiac testing her reactions are minimal - while gluten was her BIGGEST trigger food yet. I know we have just started it, but already I noticed a difference in just her ability to eat fruits and vegetables and not have severe reactions like normal. I'm hoping that with continued use it will heal her gut even more - she also gets bone broth and probiotics, and we've cut out magnesium per the GI's request (which i don't agree on but for the time being i'll try it out). its been a constant struggle trying to figure out what is going on with my daughter and we're so close to finally getting the answers, and colostrum is helping us get there with a bit more ease.
Quite a few people have tried out a few types of colostrum but I continue to take Surthrival with no intentions of changing for the time being.
I would like to continue to add to this blog post, so if you would like your story to be heard (good, bad, indifferent) and include dosages that worked for you and your favorite brand, please send it my way!
